The story behind Hotel The Dunes

A hotel with a rich history

The building on this site has been a familiar sight in Domburg since 1904. In 1953, it began a new chapter as the family hotel The Wigwam. After many years in the hospitality industry and several renovations, the time has come for the next big step: a brand new building under a brand new name – Hotel The Dunes. This contemporary four-star hotel offers all the comforts you would expect. It will have spacious rooms, a stylish restaurant, wellness facilities and an underground parking garage.

Villa The Wigwam

Villa The Wigwam was built in 1904 by Meinaard Sprenger (1860–1951). His father was mayor of Domburg from 1850 to 1868. Driven by loneliness and adventurous spirit, he moved to North America at the age of 21 and, after many detours, ended up with the Blackfoot Indian tribe. He felt at home among these people and built a ranch here, which he named Domburg. Like the local population, he traded in cowhides.

Meinhard Sprenger

His cowboy life came to an end after 20 years. He broke his knee in a fall from his horse, which meant he could no longer ride. He sold everything and returned to Domburg. He had a villa built and named it “The Wigwam”, which was now his home. The Sprenger-Blackfoot collection is preserved in the National Museum of Ethnology in Leiden.

The Bimmel family

The Bimmel family has owned “The Wigwam” since 1975, which has been officially registered as a hotel since 1951. After various renovations and expansions, it has grown into a first-class family hotel. Now it is time to add a new chapter to the history with Hotel The Dunes.
