The Wigwam is an unusual name for a hotel in a seaside resort.
A name with a bit of history.
Villa The Wigwam was built in 1904 by Meinaard Sprenger (1860 -1951).
His father was mayor of Domburg from 1850 -1868.
Driven by loneliness and an adventurous spirit, he moved to North America at the age of 21 and ended up there after many detours with the tribe of the "Blackfoot" Indians. He felt at home among these people and built a ranch there and gave it the name Domburg. Like the population, he traded in cowhides.
His cowboy life came to an end after 20 years. He broke his knee after a fall from his horse and was done with horse riding. He sold everything and returned to Domburg. He had a villa built and gave it the name "The Wigwam", this was now his home.
The Sprenger-Blackfoot” collection has been preserved in the National Museum of Ethnology in Leiden.
The Bimmel family has owned “The Wigwam” since 1975, which has been officially registered as a hotel since 1951. After various renovations and conversions, it has grown into a first-class family hotel.
Now it's time to add a new chapter to history with Hotel The Dunes.
